5-year-old Baylor Marco Grand Rapids died in car accident northern Michigan

A devastating head-on collision over the weekend has claimed the life of a young child from Grand Rapids.

In a heartfelt letter to the school community on Tuesday night, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School confirmed the passing of one of its students, part of the Marco family, who was involved in the crash on Sunday, March 23.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on US-131 near Day Road in Kalkaska County. According to Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office investigators, a 19-year-old driver from Bellaire attempted to abruptly pass another vehicle that was trying to make a left turn. The driver veered into the southbound lane, colliding head-on with the Marco family’s SUV.

All seven people involved in the accident were rushed to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Among the victims were two children, a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old, who were later transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids due to the severity of their injuries. He was identified as Baylor Marco.

Tragically, the 5-year-old child succumbed to their injuries after being listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, though authorities have stated that drugs or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors.
